REwilding Program
Rewilding is about bringing life back to the land by restoring native forests, healing soils, and reviving waterways so nature can grow again.
At Las Oncas Conservation Reserve, we protect pristine rainforest but also care for degraded lands that were once pastures. Through the Las Oncas Rewilding Program, we plant native trees, remove invasive species, and rebuild natural habitats, giving these areas a second chance to become vibrant, self-sustaining ecosystems.

Planting
Process
Our rewilding program is rooted in restoring the land as nature intended. We plant only native tree species, carefully selecting a mix of fast-growing pioneers that prepare the soil and slower-growing giants that will shape the forest for generations.
We follow the land’s natural features, taking advantage of shaded areas to nurture young plants. At the same time, we remove invasive, non-native species that threaten the balance of the ecosystem. This approach allows each space to recover its natural rhythm, creating resilient habitats where wildlife can thrive once more.
Each tree in our rewilding program is planted 3.5 meters apart, following an irregular pattern that mimics the way forests naturally grow. This spacing is important as it gives each tree enough sunlight, nutrients, and room for its roots to expand while still allowing the canopy to close over time, creating a healthy, interconnected forest.

But rewilding goes far beyond simply planting trees. The preparation work is immense. The land was once pasture, covered with aggressive invasive grass introduced to feed cattle. This grass grows fast, is extremely resilient, and competes fiercely with young trees, so even after planting, we must regularly remove it to give the saplings a chance to establish themselves.
We also protect the trees from curious wildlife like tapirs and pecarries which can damage the seedlings. Our goal is for these young trees to grow strong and tall, eventually becoming the very forests that will offer them food and shelter in the future.

Our rewilding program will advance zone by zone, starting with areas along the property’s borders to create a natural buffer that protects the heart of the reserve. Each planted zone will be monitored regularly to track tree growth and mortality rates.
This data is essential as it allows us to understand which species and planting techniques are most successful, adapt to changing conditions, and ensure that every planting effort leads to a healthy, self-sustaining forest.
By learning from each area, we refine our methods and maximize the long-term success of the rewilding process.
Every
Tree
has
a
story
We carefully select every tree we plant, choosing only native species that belong to this land and support its wildlife. This process is done in close collaboration with a local nursery run by members of the local community, whose deep knowledge and years of experience working in the area ensure the right species are chosen for each site.
By partnering with them, we not only guarantee ecological authenticity but also strengthen local livelihoods and boost the local economy by recruiting community members for site preparation, planting, and ongoing maintenance.

BRINGING
Back
The
Wild
Together
Planting a tree at Las Oncas is a true team effort. From the dedicated work at the Rancho Quemado Nursery nurturing seedlings, to selecting the right native species, preparing the soil in the field, and the hands-on dedication of volunteers who dig and plant each tree, every step matters in bringing the rainforest back to life.
This is how rewilding happens: together.
